  2. Loading of portals or tabluar menu items are now more uniform in the zooming actions and are less sporadic.

Enhancements:

  1. The new DataLayers menu consolidates the wide range of built-in global, regional, and local geoscience data sets that were originally listed under the Basemaps and Datasets menus in earlier versions of GeoMapApp. The consolidation allows the DataLayers menu to be structured more intuitively and managed more efficiently. The old-style menus are now frozen and no longer maintained but remain available for use with older versions of GeoMapApp.
  2. The Zoom Undo function has been expanded to capture the four most recent zoom actions.
  3. The Session Manager (Save Session) has been enhanced and offers a basic ability to store, share, and re-use an instance of a GeoMapApp session. Saving a session (File > Session Manager) captures limited features that include the loaded built-in data layers, layer transparency, map location, and zoom level. It also captures any loaded data portal. The captured information is stored as a small XML file that can be shared with colleagues and students. When a saved session file is imported, GeoMapApp automatically zooms to the geographical area and displays the data layers. A saved session could be shared with a class to allow every student to open GeoMapApp at exactly the same starting point with the same data layers loaded and the same area displayed. When using GeoMapApp to generate a figure for publication, storing the session could be useful for later re-use.
  4. New status bar when loading the Analog Seismic Reflection Profiles portal
  5. The GMA download for the new version pop up has changed behavior. Users are pointed to the download webpage to activate the download from the browser instead of a direct download from the application.

Three preliminary datasets have been added: one for the LDEO Core Repository data, a second for USGS samples along the US East Coast continental shelf from Maine to Florida and a third for global the dbSEABED collection. Sediment colors have been added in the Ocean Drilling Portal for the DSDP cores for Legs 1-96.

Additional geologic maps have been tiled and listed in the menus.

Summary:

Displays clickable bounding-box overlays in the map window indicating the location of all available datasets when using tear-off menus. The Layer Manager has an additional button to zoom to the region enclosing the data of that layer. Provides links to selected datasets residing at the World Data Center and at the Publishing Network for Geoscientific & Environmental Data (PANGAEA®). Plots symbols on the map using colors represented by comma-separated rgb triplets in any data table column labeled rgb

New Functions:

The ability to display symbols with colors extracted from red, green, blue triplets in a dataset column whose heading is required to be rgb.

The West, East, South, North bounds of all datasets can be displayed as bounding boxes in a map overlay when using tear-off menus. Only the locations of the data on that menu and all daughter menus are shown. Any layer can be invoked by clicking in the region of its bounding box.

A Zoom Button has been added to each layer in the Layer Manager. When pressed this button causes the map window to resize its content so as to just encompass the data pertaining to that layer.

When invoked, the Layer Manager opens in a location on the screen so that at least a part of the Layer Manger extends outside of the main Map Window.

Bug Fixes:

A fix has been made to now display selectable markers for all core photographs in the Ocean Drilling portal and not jut a single marker for the first core.

Sea-Going Version:

The sea-going version of GeoMapApp can now open all datasets residing in the shipboard database by replacing the path root of the URL with the ship's data server path.

Datasets

A selection of Geologic Maps (global) and Nautical Charts (US Coast) have been tiled and added to the database. They are listed in the Basemaps menu. The Geologic Maps and Nautical Charts are only viewable in GeoMapApp version 2.1.0 and later.

Summary:

Provides cascading and tear-off menus to facilitate selection from a large assortment of terrestrial and ocean datasets. GeoMapApp now has a Layer Manager that lists the currently selected layers for viewing, re-ordering and individual rendering with variable transparency. Each layer has its own Info Button that displays relevant dataset source and citation information to a browser window as well as a Zoom Button to scale the dataset to the map window.
Offers the ability to display images in separate layers either from menu choices or by opening image files in the user's file system, /including kmz files. If you are unable to view Geologic Maps or Nautical Charts it is likely that your installed Java Runtime Environment is not sufficiently current.
Allows users to run GeoMapApp through a Proxy Server.

Menus

Moved the Menus for the Macintosh operating system from the previous fixed location at the top of the Main (default) computer screen (Mac OSX convention) to the top of the GeoMapApp map window so that the menus are always visible and travel with the application when the map window is moved to a second screen. This solves the disappearing menus complaint of many Mac users when other GeoMapApp secondary windows are open and selected.

Layer Manager

The layer manager has legend (when appropriate) and zoom-to buttons.

Proxy Server

Added functionality to automatically detect if the GeoMapApp application is being blocked by a local proxy server as it tries to open. If GeoMpapApp detects an opening issue, it presents a Dialog Box to permit the user to enter the IP address of the Proxy Server, the Port Number used by the server, and optionally (if needed) a user name and password. This information is saved in the GMA directory (folder) in the user's home directory to facilitate subsequent openings of the application.

Imagery

Imagery is obtained automatically from a Web Mapping Service or from pre-computed tiles just by selecting the item from a menu list. Images (geologic maps, nautical charts) appear as overlays with transparent borders and can be manipulated in the Layer Manager.

Add Image Overlay...

Functionality is providedin the File menu for a user to add their own image (jpeg, gif, png, bmp) (tiff not allowed) from the local file system as an overlay in the map window by providing the corrdinates of the image's west, east, south, north bounds and by checking an appropriate box to indicate whether the image is in Mercator of Geographic (latitude, longitude) projection. A user can also add an image from a local kmz file where the bounds are provided in the contained kml file. The kmz functionality is new and may present some problems with large and complex files. We recommend that you be patient as the image is loaded and processed and scaled to it proper location. Add Image Overlay is not available for the North and South Polar Projections.

Go To...

A "Go To" function has been added to the Bookmarks Menu. When selected the user is presented with a option box for entry of west, east, south, north bounds for the desired region. The "Go To" function is not available for the North and South Polar Projections.

Changed the menu design

The main menu items now consists of: File Basemaps Portals Datasets Focus_Sites Overlays Bookmarks Education and Help.

Basemaps: The Basemaps menu presents a cascading list of grids and images at both global and regional scales. This menu can also be torn off and parked elsewhere on the terminal screen. Available images /include geologic maps, nautical charts, ocean & land temperatures.

Portals: The Portals menu presents a list of special visualization interfaces.

Datasets: The Datasets menu lists primarily tabular datasets. This menu can also be torn off and parked separately from the main map nwindow.

Focus Sites: The Focus Sites menu organizes datasets according tio the National Science Foundation MARGIN and RIDGE2000 Programs. This menu can also be torn off and parked separately from the main map nwindow.

Overlays: The Overlays menu list datasets consisting of polylines and unfilled polygons, such as coastlines, lakes and rivers, country boundaries, watersheds, etc.

Bookmarks: The Bookmarks menu allows an user to save the coordinates of the current map window either for the session or permanently in a file. This functionality allows one to return to a saved area. The saved bookmarks can be opened from a tear-off menu.

Education: The Education menu presents a choice of a few related educational web sites.

Help: The Help menu allows selection of a help "cookbook" and a link to tutorial movies. We are in the progress of updating the tutorials to GeoMapApp version 2.x.x.

Note: The menus are implimented from a set of xml files. This method allows us to continuallyb add new grids, imagery, tabular data, and overlays without the need to re-compiled the program.

Layer Manager

There is now a separate Layer Manager window that can be opened with the rightmost button on the toolbar or from the Overlays menu. Layers can be shuffled up and down in this window and their transparency changed with a slider bar. The layers can be turned on and off individually or removed. Each opened layer contains an info button to view the souce and citation information of the dataset using a separate browser window.

***** IMPORTANT CHANGES *****

- Added "Available Data" to the main menu bar.  This gives access to all hosted data via a searchable tree menu accessible from "Open Searchable List" or via a cascading menu from "Select Data From Menu".  It /includes a new section for NSF focus sites and currently has Ridge 2000 and MARGINS data.

- The "Database" menu has been removed.  It has been replaced with the option "Custom Data Viewers" accessible via either of the data interface options in "Available Data" from the main menu bar.

- "Open Hosted Datatables" and "Open Hosted Background or Layers" have been removed, this data is now accessible via "General Data Viewers -> Tables" and "General Data Viewers -> Layers", accessible "Open Searchable List" or "Select Data From Menu" in "Available Data" in the main menu bar.

- The WFS interface has been fixed to work correctly with additional Web Feature Services.  An area to enter bounding box parameters has been added to allow users to download parts of features that contain too much data to be loaded in their entirety.

- Now display z value for loaded grids in the display to the right of the main menu bar.  To display the z value for the background layer make the foreground layer invisible by toggling the visible checkbox for that layer in the "Layers" window.

***** IMPORTANT FIXES *****

- Contours now load automatically again when the view is shifted or zoomed.

- Numerous fixes made to the "Grid Layer Dialog" window and the layers interface in general.  Users should play around with this part of GeoMapApp to find any additional bugs.  What is meant by this comment is that the layers interface should now work relatively smoothly and that any additional serious problems that arise should be noted.

- Fixed cursor problem with reloading grids, for the three main grids and any other loaded grids the cursor now reverts to its original state without having to move the cursor in and out of the main GeoMapApp window.

Other Changes

File Menu

Open Hosted Datatable

- "Open Hosted Datatable" has been removed from the main "File" menu, with the data interface tools accessible from "Available Data" these options are no longer necessary.

Open Hosted Background or Layer

- "Open Hosted Background or Layer" has been removed from the main "File" menu, with the data interface tools accessible from "Available Data" these options are no longer necessary.

Connect to WFS

- In the "Connect to WFS" window from the main "File" menu users can now input the STDSCALE parameter desired for a particular layer via a textbox to the right of the layer selection combobox.

- The WFS interface has been fixed to work correctly with additional Web Feature Services.  An area to enter bounding box parameters has been added to allow users to download parts of features that contain too much data to be loaded in their entirety.

Database Menu

- The "Database" menu has been removed, with the options in "Available Data" itis no longer necessary.

Toolbar

Profile Button

- Made the profile line thicker and added a dot in the center of the line so that the location of the cursor can be seen on a Mac (the Java graphics XOR function did not work on a Mac).  For a Mac user only the dot will appear, for a PC user both the circle that was present previously and the dot will appear.  The "Fit" toggle buttons in the "profile" window have been replaced by checkboxes labeled "Auto-fit".

Layers

- Numerous fixes made to the "Grid Layer Dialog" window and the layers interface in general.  Users should play around with this part of GeoMapApp to find any additional bugs.

- Added tool tip text for the lightbulb button in the "Layers" window, the text is "Open Object", indicating that the lightbulb button opens a layer.

- Fixed cursor problem with reloading grids, for the three main grids and any other loaded grids the cursor now reverts to its original state without having to move the cursor in and out of the main GeoMapApp window.

Grid Button

- Fixed cursor problem with reloading grids, for the three main grids and any other loaded grids the cursor now reverts to its original state without having to move the cursor in and out of the main GeoMapApp window.

Lat/Lon Display

- Lat/Lon display to the right of the toolbar is now formatted so that at each zoom level the same number of digits are displayed no matter where the cursor is.  This prevents the  display from shifting back and forth while the cursor is moving.

- Now display z value for loaded grids in the display to the right of the main menu bar.  To display the z value for the background layer make the foreground layer invisible by toggling the visible checkbox for that layer in the "Layers" window.

- None for this version.

Other Changes

File Menu

Import Data

- "Import Data" in the "File" menu changed to "Import Data Tables".

- In "File->Import Data" the text that appears in the "Custom Databases" window has been changed to clearly indicate that comma-separated tabular data can only be loaded if the appropriate option is selected in the "separated" pull-down menu.

- For "Import Data" from the "File" menu the options in the "File" menu of the "Custom Databases" window have been changed slightly; "Import from ASCII file" is now "Import from ASCII (text) file" to indicate to beginner users what the general file type should be.  Also, "Import from Excel file" has been changed to "Import from Excel spreadsheet" to more accurately describe what should (and can) be imported via that option.

Database Menu

Bathymetry, Gravity and Magnetic Profiles

- Button text changed and tool tip text added to the "Import" button in the "Bathymetry, Gravity and Magnetic Profiles" option of the "Database" menu to indicate that only MGD77 data files can be imported.

Earthquake Locations and Epicenters

- For "Earthquake Locations and Epicenters" from the "Database" menu the labels for the main dataset options on the right have been adjusted.  Units have been added to the label for depth and tool tip text has been added to the "Years" text boxes to indicate that the minimum year is 1964 and the maximum year in 1995.

Seafloor Ages (Selected Isochrons)

- In "Seafloor Ages (Selected Isochrons)" from "Database" menu, "Age = " that appears at the bottom of the GeoMapApp window when an isochron is selected now reads "Age (millions of years) = " to more clearly indicate the units.

Other Datasets (Hosted)

- For "Database->Other Datasets (Hosted)" put back in options to import data.  These changed appear in the "File" menu in the "Custom Databases" window.

- For "Other Datasets (hosted)" from the "Database" menu the options in the "File" menu of the "Custom Databases" window have been changed slightly; "Import from ASCII file" is now "Import from ASCII (text) file" to indicate to beginner users what the general file type should be.  Also, "Import from Excel file" has been changed to "Import from Excel spreadsheet" to more accurately describe what should (and can) be imported via that option.

Toolbar

Save As Button

- Tool tip text for "Save" button in the main toolbar changed from "Save grid" to "Save As" because it performs exactly the same functions as the "Save As..." option from the "File" menu.

Grid Button

- In "3D View" in the "Grid Options" window changed default window size for rendered image of 3D View so that it would fit on a typical laptop-sized screen.

Layers Button

- For the "Layers" window accessed via the "Import Layers" button the "Question mark" button now links to the correct help page.

***** IMPORTANT TO NOTE *****

- When using Bathymetry, Gravity and Magnetic Profiles MAKE SURE TO CLOSE THIS IF YOU ARE GOING TO LOAD MORE THAN 2 OR THREE THINGS FROM THE DATABASE MENU!  The new control files are big, and though they have been reduced from their original size loading more than 2 or three things will cause GeoMapApp to run out of memory.

- In Bathymetry, Gravity and Magnetic Profiles:  When using the "Download Data" button make sure NOT to change the name of the files in the "Save As" window that pops up. The files need to have the same name as the files on the remote site where the data is located.

Other Changes

Database Menu

Bathymetry, Gravity and Magnetic Profiles

- Modified to load control files from new locations: user-created control files in the local directory "mgg_control_files" and the new control files in the remote directory MGG.  Also modified to completely clear tracks when "Close" button is clicked to account for the large size of the new control files.

- In Bathymetry, Magnetics and Gravity the data for the selected leg is now loaded from an MGD77 data file located in the new MGG data folders.

- In Bathymetry, Gravity and Magnetic Profiles added button to the right side called "Import Leg from MGD77 File" and added radio buttons.  The "Import" button provides functionality to create mgg control files from MGD77 data files.  Creating an mgg control file with this button will immediately load the selected legs into the list and onto the map.  This creates a directory in the default user directory called "mgg_control_files". NOTE: The legs will only be added to the new control file if they have data in their Bathymetry Corrected Depth, Free Air Anomaly or Magnetics Residual Field columns.

- The radio buttons switch between various already-created control files.  Any user control files will always remain loaded (so long as they are located in the proper directory, which is mgg_control_files in the default user directory).

- The "load" button has been renamed "View Profile", and double-clicking on a leg in the list is equivalent to clicking on the "View Profile" button.

- Added "Download Data" button below the "View Profile" button which allows the user to download the MGD77 data files for the currently selected leg(s).  Multiple cruises can now be selected for downloading using the "Download Data" button.

Help Menu

Show Help

- Fixed the help page URL; now accesses current help pages.

Toolbar

Grid Button

- Added "Pixels" to indicate what "Width" and "Height" refer to when in "3D view".

Layers Button

- For the "Import Grid" option from the "Layers" buttons, imported files are now imported correctly (previously were named based on the directory the original file was in, now named based on the original file itself).

GeoMapApp 1.3.5

Main Menu Changes

-The Under Development menu has been discarded and Drilling DSDP is now under the Database menu.

-Import Data has been moved from the Database menu to the File menu.

-Other Data has been added to the Database menu and is now the portal to the global datasets.

-Preferences has been moved from the View menu to the File menu.

-A Save As option has been added to the File menu which operates in exactly the same way as the save button.

-The View menu now has a Grids menu which allows you to choose one of the three main grids.  Choosing an option will load the corresponding grid and display the grid dialog.

-The Help menu has been moved to the left to be next to the other menus.

Main Tool Bar Changes

-The Save button has been moved to the left.

-The Profile button now loads a grid when selected s/ince this is necessary for its proper operation.  Deselecting the Profile button disposes the grid unless the Grid Dialog window is open.  In addition the Profile window now has radio buttons that allow switching between Great Circle and Straight Line instead of a drop down menu.

-The Grid Dialog button now loads a grid when selected and disposes the grid when deselected.  The Grid Dialog window has been changed from a JDialog to a JFrame, making it minimizable.  The Reload button is simply the Load button renamed.  The drop down menu containing the grid types now loads whichever grid is selected automatically.  The Contour button in the Grid Dialog Window can now be accessed even if the interval in the text field is not changed.  The Contour window now obtains reasonable values for min, max and interval.  The redundant and non-functional no option has been removed from the Contour window.  Closing the Grid Dialog window now disposes the grid and gets rid of any contour lines.

Main Map Changes

-Correct units (i.e. meters/mgal) now displayed according to which grid is loaded.  Moving the cursor over the map no longer refocuses on the main app window.      Specific Database Menu Changes

-Import Data is now in the file menu and browse databases can no longer be accessed from Import Data.

-Other Data has been added to the Database menu and automatically brings up the selection window for the global datasets when selected.  The import options cannot be accessed through Other Data.

-Single Channel Seismic now has a scroll pane on the right side of the main window containing all the tracks in alphabetical order. Clicking on a track in the scroll pane will highlight it on the map.  Double-clicking will display the profile in the window at the bottom of the main window.  The "Load Already Digitized ..." dialog window no longer appears when the View Profile button is clicked.  Instead there is a new Load Already Digitized button that performs the same actions as clicking yes in the Load Already Digitized dialog window.  The Load Already Digitized button will display the profile of the selected track no matter what options are selected.  Double-clicking on a track on the main map now displays the profile of that track.  Zoom buttons have been added to the toolbar for the profile window on the bottom left of the main window.

-The Color Scale tool and Symbol Scale tool are now both JFrames, making them minimizable.  In addition, they display the data type     bieng colored/scaled and the database they belong to in their title.  Tabs have been added to the tab pane at the bottom of the main     window indicating which data type is coloerd and which is scaled.  The Color Scale tool now defaults to normalized.

Other Changes

-I think that it was in Underway MG&G that the circle on the map that indicates the location of the part of the track your cursor is over was made thicker to be more visible.  It might have been in Single Channel Seismic.  Sorry for the confusion, if you can find it see if you want the circle thicker or larger.  Unfortunately the color cannot be made uniform as the circle is displayed using an XORing of the pixels     with the map, meaning that having a solid color would make the map pixels unrecoverable unless the map were repainted, which causes many problems.

"Single Channel Seismics" database.  When a cruise is loaded,  GeoMapApp now reads crustal ages for points along the track, and displays the age, for the current cursor position, at the end of the text string below the image when the cursor is in the image window.  Ages are sampled from a global digital age model developed by Mueller, et al.

High resolution bathymetry grids on the northern and southern East Pacific Rise, with grid node spacing to ~2 meters (18S)  and ~4 meters (9N) have been added to the database.  They may be viewed by selecting an item under the "Hi_Res_Grids" sub-menu of the "Places" menu.  Selecting a grid will zoom to the area of the high-res grid, and automatically load the data.  A button in the rendering tools must be pressed to render the grid.

Modifcations to 3D Rendering tool:
  • Changes to VE are applied in a way that preserves the focal point (previously moved it up/down, sometimes out ot the viewport).
  • After adjusting the viewpoint (when mouse button is released), the current perspective geometry is always applied.
  • Clicking in the viewport will change focal point to clicked point whenver that point has an associated elevation.
Access to high resolution grids is implemented through a menu item in the "Places" menu.  See next item for details.

SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) topography for N. and S. America and Eurasia is now loaded when a grid is loaded.  High-resolution land topography can therefore be rendered with the tools mentioned above. In versions before 1.1, only ocean bathymetry was loaded.
In the underlying topography database, the format for grid and mask tiles has been revised.  This means that pre-1.1 versions may not be accessing the up-to-date database.  Image tiles are unchanged.

GeoMapApp 1.1 (Mercator only) has added a rendering tools dialog for
  • customizing colors
  • 3D perspective viewing
once a topography grid has been loaded.  "Help" for these tools will be available soon.
Caution: Rendering performance may be very slow on lower-end machines.
We recommend testing these tools first on a small map (i.e. first resize map window to ½ - ¼).
