Using the Places Menu

The Places Menu allows the user to zoom directly to different regions, either from listed choices or to entries added by the user.

Add Place

By clicking on Add Place, a dialog box opens allowing the user to give a name to the current view in the Main Map Window.

The place name is then added to the end of the Places menu.

The user can also choose save to file to save the current map view as a jpeg file.

Edit Places

This option is not currently implemented.

.

Show Places

When Show Places is selected, the Main Map Window shows by outline and name all of the places listed in the Places Menu and its submenus.

This includes places added by the user through the Add Places function.

When the cursor enters a place area, its outline and label are highlighted in white. Double clicking then zooms the Main Map Window to this region.  Show Places can be toggled on and off.

World

Selecting World returns the Main Map Window to the original, full view of the world. This is a handy way to return from a very high-resolution view. The shortcut is to press the 'Alt/Option' and 'W' keys.

Margins Focus Sites

The Margins Focus Sites selection opens a submenu with study regions chosen by the MARGINS research program of the U.S. National Science Foundation. Each region is a focus site for collaborative investigations.

Ridge2000_ISS

The Ridge2000_ISS selection opens a submenu listing the RIDGE 2000 Integrated Study Sites (ISS). These are settings of interest to investigators whose research encompasses the Mid-Ocean Ridge and processes active along its axis.

Hi_Res_Grids

The High-Res_Grids (high resolution grids) selection opens a submenu that then cascades to other submenus listing small areas of very detailed information, particularly bathymetry. Selecting a grid zooms the map to a closeup of the area. The Grid Options window also opens, offering the user the Palette Tool and 3D View creation options.
